1.
How do I configure my mail reader to read my GDN mail?
It depends on the mail program that you use. Here are the
generic mail settings:
- SMTP Server:
mail.gdn.net
- POP3 Server:
mail.gdn.net
Note: Eudora
needs the information for your POP account. This is your username@gdn.net
(enter your own username).
2. I
get an "envelop" error when I try to receive my mail. What's wrong??
Envelop errors occur when a mail message is corrupted
or truncated so these errors must be resolved by a GDN technician. We
look for these messages from time to time, but you may want to e-mail
support@gdn.net and notify them.
3. I
would like to add an additional mailbox to my Internet account. How
can I do this?
GDN offers additional mailboxes at $5.00/mo. Please contact
us via e-mail at sales@gdn.net or
you can call GDN Sales at (352)371-8401.
4. If
I cancel my GDN account, can I have a .forward point to my new email
address?
A .forward file would not work since canceled accounts
are deleted off of the GDN Server.
5. How
do I configure my news reader to get Usenet News from GDN?
It depends on the news program that you are using. Within
the program's configuration, set the NNTP server to: news.gdn.net
6. I
tried to connect to GDN's news server and the connection was refused.
Why?
If you are trying to connect to the news server from
your GDN account and were refused, there may be a problem with the news
server or the load may be high.
7. I
want to put up a homepage. How do I go about this?
First you will need to make sure you currently have a
GDN Full Internet Account. This account comes with storage space you
need to make the page accessible to others. There are some very good
information on HTML at www.yahoo.com.
8. I
have a homepage and I want to use some CGI scripts. What do I have to
do?
You need to e-mail admin@gdn.net
to get permission to run CGI scripts. The CGI scripts you want to use
will need to be submitted for review before they are put online.
9. Is
there an easier way to log into my shell account to replace my web page
files?
You can ftp into your home directory by ftping to slave.gdn.net
and logging in with your username and password. If you are replacing
a file with the same name you will not need to change the file's permissions.
A telnet application is also helpful to have so that you can log into
your shell without terminating your PPP connection.
or
Telnet to slave.xplay.net
then input your username, and password
10.
Why do I get "DNS Failures" sometimes trying to reach a specific homepage?
"DNS" stands for "Domain Name System" and it is similar
to a large phone book or dictionary. Each time you type in a web address
the system consults the DNS and tries to obtain the associated IP address.
If it can't find an entry for the URL it assumes it doesn't exist and
returns an error message. When you receive such an error, double check
the spelling. If it's correct then there may be a problem with the remote
server. You may also want to make sure that your connection configuration
is correct: GDN's Primary DNS is 63.97.188.4 - if your OS (Windows 95/98)
supports server-assigned name server addresses, please use that function.
If the problem persists call Technical Support.
11.
I get this error "The computer you're dialing into cannot establish
a Dial-Up Networking connection. Check your password, and then try again."
What is the problem?
This is a common Windows 95 problem. The main cause is
a incorrect USERNAME, or PASSWORD was entered. Make sure that you have
CAPS LOCK off. Unix is case sensitive so anything capitalized in your
USERNAME is wrong, and anything that isn't supposed to be capitalized
in your PASSWORD is incorrect also. This makes the GDN Server reject
you at login.
Another problem that causes this is any SPACES that you put before or
after your USERNAME, and PASSWORD. This also makes the login invalid.
So when entering in your username, and password take your time.
